Simple Methods To Make Your Guitar Practice Sound More Musical Instantly

March 17, 2019

A common thing I observed while dealing with students at different levels, is the challenges they face to make what they are practicing on the guitar sound more musical...

This makes the practice feel boring and repetitive and hampers the real gains you can make in your guitar playing...

There's also a general belief that you have to attain a certain level of skill on the instrument, before you could make anything sound good...

This belief has hardly any truth to it, and the cause for people to believe in this statement is that they have not experienced the reality due to a number of reasons...

The number one reason being lack of guidance and direction, especially from someone who has overcome the same struggles and helped other people deal with these challenges successfully...

The truth is, anybody and I mean literally anybody, can be made to sound musical on the Guitar.... irrespective of their existing playing level....

So here, I list down some of the simple yet highly effective methods, that I use with students, to instantly make their Guitar playing sound better...

  1. Customise things to your own playing level: Probably the biggest mistake that people learning guitar make... to take up stuff that is too difficult for their own individual skill level...There's a simple solution to this problem.. No matter what you want to play, you can customise it to your own playing level... Whether it's a hard to voice chord for a beginner, or a lead guitar line for an intermediate guitarist...Bringing down the difficulty in playing, and enjoying the music is the key to fix this. As you get better, you can even raise complexity of any piece of music and enjoy working on something challenging, which again leads to faster results. If you struggle to customise things to your individual playing level, you need to approach a teacher who can help you do that.. This is critical for consistent progress on guitar.

  2. Playing over backing track or drum beats: Not only does it help build your Rhythm guitar skills and timing, it also instantly motivates you to play and perform better. No matter what playing level you are at, you must spend time playing over a backing track or some kind of drum groove, without worrying too much about the mistakes... Although it sounds challenging in the beginning, you get used to it faster than you think you can...

  3. Don't just play it, Feel it: It's one thing to work on Guitar technique through various exercises, but you would be surprised to know that any exercise can be turned into a good sounding music. The key to do this is to stop treating it as an exercise, and immerse yourself into listening to the notes or chords, and playing it with as much involvement as possible. Complete involvement in the learning process is the key to faster progress in anything!

  4. Variations: Change the way you play something, and you instantly find something more interesting. E.g. If you are learning a new chord shape, don't always stick to strumming each chord. Break the chord into arpeggios through single picking the notes and it'll turn the same chord into a nice sounding melody, if you can use rhythm creatively. You can even combine both these things to create an even wider effect. For lead guitar lines, keep the notes the same and vary the rhythm, or keep the rhythm the same and vary the notes.... there are millions of possibilities here, which I train my students on...

  5. Practice Creatively: Ask yourself a question. "When you first decided to learn Guitar, was it to perform mindless exercises on it?" I bet you did not. Now ask yourself, why have you limited yourself to thinking that learning guitar is just about exercise and practice? The real joy of learning guitar is in utilising the skills you learn to create the music you want. You can use this at every stage of your playing... whatever little or more you know about scales, arpeggios, chords or technique, apply it to create something rather than always playing cover songs or somebody else's lead lines...

These are just a few methods we covered, but in reality there are hundreds of proven learning methods I use to train my students, that can escalate your guitar playing and musical skills to higher levels faster than you think...

Don't just wait for the day to arrive when you would be a master guitar player who always sounds good, and start being that guitar player today by applying these simple principles...
